A Safe, Supportive, and Enriching Place for Every Child After School

The hours after school can be a vulnerable time for children. For working parents, the end of the school day doesn’t always align with their schedule. For many families, finding reliable and enriching after-school care is a challenge. At the Urbana Neighborhood Connections Center (UNCC), we’ve created a space that doesn’t just fill time. It fills a need.

The After-School Study Center is designed to support every aspect of a child’s development. We don’t simply offer homework help and snacks. We provide a structured, nurturing environment where students from all backgrounds can grow academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively.

What We Offer

From the moment students walk through our doors at 3:00 PM, they are welcomed by a team of caring adults who are committed to seeing them thrive. The first portion of the afternoon is dedicated to academic support. Students receive homework assistance from trained tutors and volunteers who work closely with them to understand their challenges and celebrate their progress.

But we know that learning doesn’t end when homework is done. Our program also includes:

  • Creative Exploration: Through arts and crafts, storytelling, and hands-on projects, students are encouraged to express themselves and think creatively.
  • Social Development: We lead group discussions and activities focused on teamwork, kindness, conflict resolution, and leadership. Children are taught how to build healthy relationships and develop emotional resilience.
  • Physical Activity: We recognize the importance of movement. Students participate in games, exercise, and outdoor play that promote health and teamwork.
  • Multimedia Learning: Students engage with technology in a way that enhances their curiosity and problem-solving skills. From basic computer use to guided digital activities, we help prepare students for a digital world.

Our curriculum changes with the seasons and with student needs. Whether it’s a group project based on a book, a cooking activity, or a guest speaker from the local community, every day brings a new opportunity to learn and connect.

A Place for Every Child

At UNCC, we believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of family income, background, or ability. Our program is open to all school-age children in the Urbana community. We work closely with parents, teachers, and school administrators to ensure that students are getting the support they need both academically and emotionally.

We also recognize that every child is unique. That’s why we foster an inclusive space that welcomes all learning styles, abilities, and personalities. Our staff receives training in trauma-informed care, cultural responsiveness, and developmental psychology to better serve our diverse student population.

Why Families Trust UNCC

Many of the families who join our After-School Study Center say they feel like they’ve found more than a program. They’ve found a second home. Parents report improvements in their children’s grades, confidence, and behavior. Students begin to take more responsibility for their schoolwork. They build friendships, find mentors, and discover new interests.

Some children arrive shy or unsure of themselves. After just a few weeks, they are leading group discussions, sharing their artwork, or mentoring a younger student. These transformations don’t happen by accident. They happen because of the consistent care and intentional programming that defines our work.

Affordable and Accessible

We understand that affordability matters. Our program is designed to be accessible to all families, with many participants qualifying for reduced or no-cost enrollment based on income or need. We also offer transportation support in partnership with local schools when possible.

Parents can feel confident knowing that their child is in a safe, structured space every weekday afternoon, without having to worry about the financial strain that many other after-school programs impose.
