Building Strong Readers Through Confidence, Care, and Foundations
Young children grow rapidly in every area of life, and their early years are the most important time to build strong literacy skills. The UNCC Intensive Literacy Program is designed to give students in grades K through 3 the support, attention, and encouragement they need to become confident readers. This program is more than tutoring. It is a nurturing environment where children strengthen foundational reading skills through one-on-one instruction, engaging activities, and positive relationships with caring adults.
Reading touches every part of a child’s future. It influences academic success, communication, creativity, and even the way children think about themselves. That is why this program focuses on the essential building blocks of literacy, combined with daily enrichment that helps students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. At UNCC, we believe every child deserves the chance to unlock the joy of reading.
What Makes This Program Special
Some children need extra attention to truly thrive as readers. Many classrooms are full, schedules are busy, and teachers must meet the needs of dozens of students at once. The Intensive Literacy Program bridges that gap by offering individualized instruction in a setting designed specifically for early learners.
Every child receives one-on-one support two days a week from trained instructors who understand how young children learn. Our approach is centered on patience, encouragement, and hands-on engagement. Children participate in activities that strengthen vocabulary, phonological awareness, decoding skills, comprehension, and overall reading fluency. These sessions help students build confidence while also giving them the tools they need to grow as independent learners.
During after-school hours, students receive daily enrichment that reinforces what they learn during one-on-one time. These activities may include storytelling, early writing practice, vocabulary games, guided reading, group discussions, and hands-on literacy centers. Children have fun while strengthening the skills that shape their future success.
A Closer Look at the Student Experience
Supporting the Whole Child
At UNCC, literacy is not only about words on a page. It is about nurturing the whole child. Children need encouragement, patience, and consistent support in order to thrive. Our team works to build trust and confidence with each student so they feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things.
Many children who struggle with reading begin to doubt themselves. They may hesitate to read aloud or shy away from schoolwork. Our program helps rebuild that confidence. Through steady progress, praise, and a supportive learning community, children begin to see reading as something they can succeed at. This shift in mindset often carries over into their other subjects and into their general attitude toward school.
The flexible and child-centered environment also allows each student to discover what kind of learner they are. Whether they enjoy stories, writing, hands-on activities, or imaginative play, they find an entry point that helps reading feel natural and enjoyable.
Why Parents Trust This Program
Families appreciate the Intensive Literacy Program because it provides meaningful support during the foundational years of learning. Parents often notice that their children become more confident, more willing to read independently, and more excited to share what they have learned. Many begin to show improvements not only in literacy but in focus, behavior, and overall academic engagement.
Parents value the structure, the personal attention, and the caring adults who consistently invest in their child’s growth. They also appreciate that the program reinforces what children learn in school, which helps them stay on track and continue building skills throughout the year.
Enrollment and Accessibility
The program is open to students in grades K through 3 in the Urbana and Champaign communities. Because UNCC strives to make all programs accessible to local families, enrollment is free or low-cost depending on eligibility. All materials, books, and instructional supplies are included.
Space is limited due to the individualized nature of the program. Families are encouraged to register early so their child can benefit from the full experience.
